Fal Estuary

- The beautiful Fal estuary is home to the third largest natural deep water harbour in the world, as you pass the St. Mawes castle which was built by Henry VII  you will see many boats on their moorings at Mylor, a small parish which once contained a naval dockyard. Further up the river past the king harry ferry the river is over 18m deep, large cargo ships lay up there. It has been said that the shape of the economy can be told by the number of ships moored up. There is always plenty to see and an abundance of wildlife can be found.

Red Necked Grebe

- The Helford river is an area of outstanding natural beauty where property has become very desirable and a wide variety of birds can be found such as the curlew, turnstones, redshank, dunlin and oystercatchers as well as migratory birds such as red necked or slavonian grebes, great northern and black throated divers, common scoter and eider ducks.

- Those of you who have read books by Daphne du Maurier will recognise the name of Frenchman's Creek which is one of the seven creeks which lead off the Helford. This was her only romantic novel, written whilst she was on her honeymoon here.

Smugglers Inn

- Visit the recently re thatched Smugglers Inn at Tolverne, the popular place to eat and drink.

Fowey

- Take a trip to Fowey, with its deep water harbour entrance, a bustling charming little port which originated in the 13th century. It has rows of pastel coloured terraced houses on its western side. Fowey is best known for its literary connections- Daphne du Maurer, Kenneth Grahame, Leo Walmsley and Sir Arthur Quiller Couch (Q) all lived here. There is a very good selection of places to eat from bistros and restaurants to fish and chips. This pretty town has a wonderful mix of independent specialist shops, galleries and delicatessens.  On the opposite bank of the river is Polruan an ancient but attractive fishing village which has a subtropical coastal garden overlooking the sea and the beautiful Fowey estuary.
